What you'll accomplish
A config workbook that has grown across dozens of tabs and modules develops inconsistent naming, mismatched terminology, and unfilled fields that are hard to catch by scanning manually. A single Claude conversation with the workbook attached flags those inconsistencies in minutes, work that would otherwise take an hour or more of tab-by-tab review.
What you'll need
Export each module tab as a CSV, or if the workbook contains real customer, vendor, or employee values you have not cleared for a personal AI account, export just the column headers with a handful of sample rows using fabricated values instead. Config workbooks are internal build documents rather than customer records, but they can still reference real client system names, so check your engagement's AI policy before uploading the full thing.
What you should see: Your file listed as attached to the conversation before you send your first message.
Troubleshooting: If the workbook has many tabs, attach them as separate files rather than one giant export. Claude handles several smaller, clearly labeled files more reliably than one file with inconsistent tab structures.
Example prompt to copy-paste:
I've attached our ERP configuration workbook, covering the Finance, Supply Chain, and HR modules. Check for inconsistent field naming across tabs, missing required fields, and terminology that doesn't match between modules (for example, one tab calling something "Cost Center" and another calling the same thing "Department Code"). List every issue with the tab and row it appears in.
What you should see: A list grouped by issue type, each entry naming the specific tab, row, and field involved rather than a vague summary of "some inconsistencies found."
Open the workbook alongside Claude's response and confirm each flagged item against the live tabs before changing anything. Some flagged inconsistencies are intentional differences between modules, not errors.
